The development of the Department of Economics in the College of Social Sciences at the National Taipei University can be traced back to the Department of Public Finance at the Taiwan Provincial Junior College of Administration, established in 1949. The College was transformed into the Taiwan Provincial College of Laws & Business in 1955, and the Department was renamed the Department of Economics in 1958. In 1961, it was further transformed into the Department of Economics, College of Laws & Business, Taiwan Provincial Chung Hsin University.

The Department began admitting students into its extended education program in 1964 and has implemented the dual system of regular undergraduate and extended education programs ever since. The Department was renamed the Department of Economics, College of Laws & Business, National Chung Hsin University, along with the transformation of the University into a national university. The Graduate School of Economics was established in 1979 and consecutively established master’s and doctoral programs in Economics in 1979 and 1987, contributing to the cultivation of proficient economic professionals in society.

Acknowledging the increasing demand for human capital, the Department was expanded in 1991 with a larger student body. In compliance with the revised University Law in 1995, the Graduate School of Economics was formally merged into the Department of Economics. The Department has featured a complete system that comprises the undergraduate, the extended education, the master, and the doctoral programs ever since. Since February 1st, 2000, the Department was further transformed into its current establishment, the Department of Economics, College of Social Sciences, National Taipei University.
